Where: The crash occurred on 49th Street North at 118th Avenue in Pinellas Park.
Why/How: Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are investigating a deputy involved two vehicle crash in Pinellas Park.
According to investigators, 47-year-old Jeremy Whitney was driving his 2017 Toyota Tacoma southbound in the right lane of 49th Street North approaching the intersection of 118th Avenue North.
On-duty K-9 Deputy Whitehurst was driving his fully marked 2018 Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Chevy Tahoe westbound on 118th Avenue North with his lights and sirens activated to an emergency call for service. Deputy Whitehurst slowed down and attempted to clear the intersection. Investigators say the 2017 Toyota driven by Whitney struck Deputy Whitehurst’s Chevy Tahoe on the passenger side.
Deputies say Whitney complained of a minor injury and was transported to the hospital. He was released shortly after being admitted. Deputy Whitehurst and his K-9 Devon were not injured as a result of the crash.
Investigators say speed on the part of Whitney was a possible factor in the crash. Whitney was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
The investigation continues.
