When: The inmate was pronounced deceased at about 6:28 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2018.
Where: Pinellas County Jail is located at 14400 49th Street North, in Clearwater.
The inmate was being held in the medical facility while awaiting classification.
Why/How: According to investigators, on Sunday, January 14, 2018, 59-year-old inmate Johnny Mack Amons, was found unresponsive in his holding area, while awaiting classification in the medical facility.
Detention and medical staff administered CPR to Amons, but he was pronounced deceased at about 6:28 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2018, by Largo Fire Rescue.
Detectives say there were no obvious signs of injuries on the inmate's person and no incidents of confrontation or use of force. His death does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
Amons was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on January 12, 2018 after being arrested by the St. Petersburg Police Department in reference to drug charges.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine cause and manner of death.
The investigation continues.
