What: Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a two vehicle crash involving a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office prisoner transport van in Largo that injured an adult inmate.
When: The crash occurred at about 1:01 p.m. on Monday, July 3, 2017.
How/Why: Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating a two vehicle crash involving a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office prisoner transport van in Largo.
According to investigators, G4S Security Officer Janice Blue was driving a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, 2009 Chevrolet prisoner transport van, transporting inmate, 34-year-old Lukasz Jan Tatarczuch to the Pinellas County Jail.
Investigators say that Security Officer Blue was stopped in the Chevrolet transport van at the red traffic light on 49th Street North, at the intersection of 144th Avenue North, in the right hand southbound curb lane. A 2005 Dodge Durango driven by 26-year-old Sarah Pilla, driving in the same lane behind the transport van was slowing to stop for the same red traffic light. When the traffic light turned green, the Dodge Durango operated by Pilla was distracted when she looked down at her cell phone and rear-ended the transport van.
Pilla and her passengers, Kaden Ortiz, and Dominiko Malanowski were not injured as a result of the crash. Security Officer Blue received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Investigators say that the inmate passenger, Tatarczuch was handcuffed in the back of the transport van at the time of the crash and was transported by paramedics to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Both vehicles sustained minor damage.
Investigators say that impairment and speed were not factors in the crash.
Prior to the crash, Pinellas deputies arrested Tatarczuch for Driving While Driver’s License Suspended/Revoked. Tatarczuch was being transported by G4S Security to the Pinellas County Jail for the criminal charge.
The investigation continues.
